Management of natural resources based on an objective performance certificate
Within the framework of the Vienna innovation-funding-programme, the PROGIS partner For-CERT was awarded a significant grant for its project "Management of natural resources based on a objective performance certificate".
Mismanagement in the forests and within areas of unspoiled nature led due to overwhelming utilisations to a dramatically increase of natural catastrophes. The economical damages are incredible high. On the other hand many possibilities to utilise natural resources are not observed or are not respectively not yet integrated into the business circuit.
Within the environment of the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Science in Vienna there was developed the so-called “FOMUMIIS”- method, a worldwide unique method for valuating on side the natural carrying capacities of natural resources like forests, agricultural grounds etc. and on the other side to define the appropriate methods for their cultivation. The method has been filed for patent.
Decision patterns for an intensive, nevertheless sustainable cultivation can be worked out and gives a platform for a certification according EN and ISO standards as they are becoming more and more important internationally. With this method a decision support system will be developed for sustainable use of natural resources. Within the mentioned project the further development took place to have tools available that allow economical use of this scientific method. These tools have been developed in cooperation with PROGIS and its GIS platform WinGIS. The software is an expert system where scientific experts for one or several ecological analysis define the facts that have to be surveyed, after they will be entered into the system and calculated according the experts formula requirements. Further the results are converted into thematic maps showing functional degrees and fulfilment of functions depending on the input data and the defined targets. To use the method can reduce the risk of natural catastrophes as well as thousands of new workplaces can be created. Many national and international institutions have already recognized the potential to have sustainability more and more evaluated to fit into our eco-social market environment. Base for this is a detailed definition of targets, a detailed evaluation of the capabilities of the land as well as the sustainable upgrade capabilities of it.
